Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention (PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 3)

The juggernaut of Disgaea legacy rolls on and in Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention, the third part of the Disgaea series, the proceedings have taken a new-age look that has not only enriched the series but has only gained new depth when it comes to the art of strategy RPG. Kudos to NIS! They have really gone over the top.

The game unfolds in Netherworld, which is the world of Demons and the entire story is all about how the devils start off with their devilish acts only to find back their morality that helps in some sort of reincarnation from the diabolical mindset. Evil Academy, the devil’s school that teaches its pupils all the wrong things is the backdrop of the story. The school honors the students for their money business and immorality while the good boys are considered bad. The central character, Mao, the son of Overlord, dreams of overthrowing his father and capturing his throne. He sets out for turning his dreams to reality and this, triggers off a chain of events which is all what the game is all about.

The game of full of a number of characters who are a bit too much talkative though the overall game is just cool. You have the “geo box” that gives you some statistical advantages especially during the battles that can be set any where you may want it to. You can position your army on these geo boxes to enjoy strategic advantages.

The story is strong – there’s no doubt about it and so are the characters. But for the talkativeness and the childish overtone, the game is something that will make you think. You have your own army that you can man as you wish. You own range of weapons and the pack of strategy that will ensure your survival in the battles, the environmental effects of the game set an altogether newer dimension that will only make playing the game worth of the time and money you invest. It’s a tale of entertainment, only at times perplexed by too many characters opening chatter box that may leave you bedazzled in this otherwise mesmerizing game.

We like:

  • The story
  • The options of gameplay
  • The graphics and the presentation style – it reminds you of the traditional Japanese art

We hate:

  • To many characters and some of them are extremely talkative that confuse you at time
