Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)

You come out of the grip of death, almost born anew and feel the freshness of life and carry on with your mission in a never-seen-before world, through the inhospitable deserts, dense forests never visited by anyone before, wide open meadows that fail to conceal you and murky swamps with filthy water. That’s the diversity of your mission as you surge along. If you feel dumbstruck that’s what Kingdom of Amalur from Big Huge Games is all about. Written by R.A. Salvatore, the story is simply ecstatic and forms the heart of this game. You straightaway get into the shoes of the protagonist whom you can tailor and modify according to the need as the events unfold one by one. The character gets a fresh lease of life from the grasp of death, thanks to Well of Souls –a mysterious device. That sets of the game and you venture out into the mystifying world of Amalur. Your fate is predestined and you run into one peril from another.

The various levels take you to different locations of wide variety of landscapes, each pristine and unique in their form and demeanor. The demons you encounter are horrendous though if taken into account with respect of the environment, could have been a bit more compelling and challenging. However, with a perfect compactness of the surroundings coupled with striking background score and light and shade effects, you almost overlook it. The immaculate voice acting gives the effect of a movie and you cannot save yourself from thinking that it’s only a mere game. All the characters are real life and some of them would make you feel like the ones from your neighborhood.

The story is compelling and so are the characters but that’s only the tip of the iceberg! The real success of the game lies in the totality that gives you a sense of robust optimism while you play the part of the protagonist in the half-spiritual game.

With inhospitable landscapes, weird names that you can only find in fantasy and the speed of the game has stitched together the greatness of a role playing game you can be really proud of.

We like:

  • The storyline
  • The special effects, sound effects and the background music
  • The tone of the game
  • The enamoring voice-over

We hate:

  • The monsters could have been a bit more deadly to keep up with the surroundings
